All I could hear were the crashing of waves against the shore. Though physically I could see nothing, my eyes had been blindfolded, I was able to use my Sight to see the scene. It was like looking down from the belly of a bird. I watched myself being dragged across the sand, two men holding me by my elbows another followed behind. I was blindfolded, gagged, and my wrists were tied together behind me. We were walking towards a group of people gathered around a large fire. It was huge, the size of a hut for a small family. I stumbled, and almost dropped to my knees. The men holding my elbows jerked me up, sending a searing pain through my wrists and shoulders. They half dragged me the rest of the way. I tilted my head up towards the moon, it always gave me comfort. My Sight allowed me to see it and feel its calming effects as they normally are. Do not fear. I will help you through this, I heard the moon say. I nodded, hoping that the moon could see. I would allow the moons help for this.
Are you sure we should do this? Asked a familiar voice from behind me asked. Until now no one had spoken since we left the village. I could feel the tension as this voice spoke, no one wanted him to talk. It was Lucius, my betrothed. I almost crumbled to the ground again at the sound of his voice. How could he have a hand in this? My head slumped and I struggled to move forward, trying to stay away from him.
The gods will this! someone answered. I couldnt tell who it was. Others murmured their agreement. Someone moved toward me.
Do not touch her bonds, I heard the man on my right say.
I am just removing her gag, there is no need for it, she is no incantation witch! This was Lucius, he sounded furious as said this, and pulled the piece of cloth from my mouth. He let his hand linger on my face. Nor does she need the blindfold, you all know she can see you anyways, he said as he lifted that too off my eyes. I could feel the air shift with the unease caused by his mention of my Sight.
I tried as hard as I could not to look at him, even though I knew this would be the last time I could. Lucius would not go for this. Sibyl, he said as he bent down so he could look up at my face, look at me. I wanted to, gods did I want to, but I tried hard to stare straight at my feet. I was gathering my strength; I needed my strong will to do what would come next. Finally I looked up and stared right into the fire.
All of you mortals listen well, I started, allowing my eyes to take on their ethereal colors and swirls that I normally kept suppressed, I will go as you ask to the gods. They have sent for me, just as you believe they have. I will not go by your methods, however. You will not burn me as you would a common witch, you will not hang me as you would a thief, and you will not behead me as you would a murderer. I am no thief. I am no witch. I am no murderer! I will go to the gods as a sacrifice of my own accord, not as a representative of you. I ask now that you untie my bonds and let me walk freely and of my own accord! I looked around to each face standing around the fire, most showed a mixture of awe, fear, and respect. Some however showed loathing. Some remorse. I saved the most important face for last, Lucius. His face held so many emotions I thought could not be present at one time in one being; fear, loathing, awe, respect, love, and a great deal of sadness. He had expected me to escape, or do something to make them allow me to live.
The village Elder stepped forward, she was a hard old woman, who lived past her time already, and showed no signs of dying soon. With a nod from her the two men at might sides cut my bonds and released me. Lucius came running over.
Do not do this, he said as he grabbed hold of me. I stiffened. I could not allow him to talk me out of it. I will follow you, I promise that. He knew this was something I would not allow, at least not under normal circumstances.
This is your life now, but the gods will not take you if you follow, I warned him. It is likely your spirit will vanish, cease to exist.
Better than just allowing this to happen, he said, and stepped away from me. Everyone was watching now, determined to see how I would go. But I had one last this to take care of.
Where is Ace? Where is my daughter? I asked. A woman from the back of the crowd stepped forward. She was carrying a bundle of blankets.
She is here, she said, coming towards me. I felt a tear roll down my face. Ace was just about the turn two. What would she do without her mother? I worried that the villagers would not treat her right. And what if one day they decided she too should be given to the gods? I held my arms out to the woman, in hopes she would give me my daughter this one last time. She did. I held her, rocking her back and forth as I did. Finally I kissed her forehead and whispered Be strong my child. And look for me in the stars. I and the moon are your protectors. I walked over to Lucius and handed her to him. You must not leave her, I told him.
I turned around and looked back up at the moon. I closed my eyes, head still tilted up, and walked straight ahead into the water. I stopped when the water was above my ankles and looked at the moon one more time. Give me strength, I told it. I heard it reply, I will, as I started off into the water again.

I refuse to have a battle of wits with an unarmed person, so I believe you are free to go.
